works, and that from the circumstance of the time in which the Estimates have been passing through the press some receipts expected to have been encashed in 1856 will now appear in the accounts of 1857.
In the shape of Expenditure I propose to take up the Railway - not only as of vast importance for the public safety and convenience but as an outlay which will become immediately productive. In receipts there will be augmentation to the extent of £900 for Interest due in 1856, (not yet received from the Oriental Bank Corporation) and a sum of probably £1500 from the Intestate Estate Fund which the Commissariat has as yet received no orders to repay.
I mention these circumstances for your information, and beg to assure you that but for the unexpected demands now made on the Colony the expenditure would not have exceeded the Resources - And for the extraordinary demands made upon us, I trust I shall be authorized to demand compensation from the Chinese.
